Feel Good Story of the Week: The Highest Shock in the World
David Sullivan, founder of Code Blue CPR, recently installed what he believes is the world’s highest defibrillator near Mount Everest Base Camp at 16,500 feet. Just three weeks after returning to the UK, he received a call from a sherpa telling him the device had already saved the life of a French woman who had gone into cardiac arrest. “It was the proudest moment of my life,” Sullivan said.
Motivated by the loss of four close friends to cardiac arrest, Sullivan’s mission is to expand access to defibrillators and CPR training worldwide. In Nepal, he conducted several training sessions for locals who had never received such instruction before.
Sullivan is proposing a program to the UK government to train 1.2 million London schoolchildren in CPR and equip every school with a defibrillator. Reflecting on a past experience, Sullivan says, “I performed nine minutes of CPR for a young lad and used a defibrillator just three months after I had been shown how to. While I was doing this, around 30 people just watched and didn’t help because they didn’t know how.”
Thanks to people like David Sullivan and so many others who are making it “more shocking” and less deadly for cardiac arrest victims worldwide!
